Useful information
Our PE days are Monday and Friday.
Forest School
Sessions take place on a Wednesday morning. Children need a change of trousers, a good, warm waterproof coat and wellies.
Read, read, read! Reading is extremely important and we value it highly. It is a major focus in Year One. It would greatly help your child if you listen to your child read at least 3 times a week for 5 minutes. We will change books every week (Friday). We use the Little Wandle scheme for reading. We will listen to your child read 3 times each week in a small group. Some children might need extra support and will become our daily readers.
Your child will have a sheet of 'Grow the Code' and tricky words in their reading record. If you could find time to practise these also we would greatly appreciate it.
Reading Morning: Each week we hold a reading morning on a Wednesday at 8.30am. This is the opportunity for the children and their adult to spend 10 minutes reading in the classroom together.
Reading Raffle: Every time 5 times your child reads their name is entered into a reading raffle. At the end of each half term the raffle is drawn and the winner receives a hamper of goodies. The children also receive a stamp on their stamp card. For each row of stamps completed they win a prize from the golden box.
Parent's raffle: every time you read to your child and record it in their reading journal, your name will also be entered into a raffle to win a £5 Costa voucher at the end of the half term.

Summer Term Topic

This term our topic is The Seaside

Our English work will be based on The Singing Mermaid, Lighthouse Keeper's Lunch and The Storm Whale. We will be writing character descriptions, setting descriptions, recounts and simple narratives.

We will be learning our class poems from the book Commotion in the Ocean

The author we will be learning about is Julia Donnaldson.

In science we will be learning about Materials. During this unit of work, children will learn about different materials and be able to identify objects made from different materials. They will be able to identify the difference between an object and the material from which it is made. Throughout the unit, they will be helping Blot, an alien from the Plant Glog, who does not know anything about materials. Children will group and sort different materials based on their properties. They will also have the opportunity to investigate different materials to see which material
would be best to make an umbrella and curtains.

Our art work this term will be based on the work by Henri Matisse. We will be using techniques to create seaside collage pictures.

In Geography we will be learning about the human and physical feature of Scarborough and Pontefract. We will be identifying similarities and differences between the 2 locations.

In RE will be will be exploring  the story of Creation through our topic Who made the World? We will also be thinking about who we are and what it means to belong.

PE this term we will be developing our athletic skills and exploring net and wall games.

We are lucky to have Forest school lessons in autumn 1. Our forest school leader John will be developing our ability to self-regulate, self-motivate, empathise with others and improve our own self-awareness. This term we will be learning about the wildlife in our forest school area.

Home Schooling

Take your time and have fun.

A couple of quality hours throughout the day (20/30 minute sessions) is more than enough. They don't need to be sat at a table working for 5 hours.

Learning is fun and isn't always about sitting down at a table. Lego, playdough and toys all hold educational value.

There are plenty of free  educational apps to use on ipads/tablets etc.

Enjoy getting outside. Wrap up warm and enjoy a little or big walk. Getting outside will help.

Do what you can! A little of something will always be better than nothing. Remember if its not working, stop and have a break!

Worksheets: If we do attach a worksheet to a lesson, please do not feel you have to print it out. the worksheet may be just a guide or an example on how to set out the activity. Also we will be providing exercise books so the children can write their answers in there.
